Sultanabad rug

Beautiful late 19thcentury Sultanabad / Sunjab Rug. This lovely rug was part of the Vanderbilt collection. An old label on the back is inscribed Mrs.C.Vanderbilt no.1, West 57th Street, 1st Floor. Vanderbilt started building his New York French style mansion on the corner of 5th Avenue & 57th Street, in 1879, completing it in 1882. Living there with his wife Alice Gwynne until the first World War. In the mid 1920’s the property was pulled down to make way for a department store.
This rug, with it’s wonderful soft green ground, subtle pattern and fine weave is most unusual. Sultanabad lies at the centre of many weaving villages in West Persia. For example the border bears similarities to the patterns of the Sennah rugs…But the weaving more of early Saruqs and Sunjab’s. However wherever it’s exact origins, it is a fine piece.
Condition good, with fairly even wear some small old repairs; very little colour fade.
