Exciting news for Two WEADA members

7 Feburary 2012

Exciting news for 2 WEADA members this week with the announcement of the shortlist for Britain’s Best Antiques Shops as part of National Antiques Week awards organised jointly by Homes and Antiques and Antiques News and Fairs

Michael and Jo Saffell of Bath are on the shortlist for “Specialist Antiques Shop” and a very deserving position it is with their wonderful display of English tins for the collector and dealer.  Mike and Jo have been members of WEADA since the beginning and we are delighted to offer them our congratulations for a job well done in getting so many votes.

Congratulations also to the other deserving WEADA member,  on the shortlist in the “Antique Shop” category,  Blighty Antiques located in the Suffolks area of Cheltenham, dubbed the “Notting Hill area of Cheltenham”.  Their absolutely charming bijou shop is home to a mix of country house and colonial pieces with some fabulously eccentric decorative accessories.

We wish Michael and Jo Saffell and Blighty Antiques the very best of luck for the final announcement on Thursday 8 March at the Bath Decorative Antiques Fair when Kirstie Allsopp of Channel 4 Television will announce the lucky winners.

Blighty Antiques will be exhibiting at The Bath Decorative Antiques Fair along with WEADA chairman Patrick Macintosh of Macintosh Antiques of Sherborne, Michael Chugg of Tetbury and Anthony Cole of Warminster.  Complimentary tickets available from the web site.

NATIONAL ANTIQUES WEEK 14-21 NOVEMBER 2011

Nominate your favourite antiques shop!

Do you have a favourite antiques shop which you can't go past without popping in for a browse? Is there a dealer who knows about your passion for mid-century glass or vintage scent bottles and phones you up to tell you when he has something exciting in?

Or perhaps there's a saleroom you haunt on a regular basis – knowing that you're going to come away with a treasure – after an afternoon's entertainment thanks to the auctioneer.

Homes & Antiques magazine and Antiques News & Fairs (the organizers of National Antiques Week) think these unsung heroes of the high street deserve to be recognised and are launching a campaign to find the nation's best antiques businesses.

Simply nominate your favourite at www.homesandantiques.com or www.nationalantiquesweek.co.uk and tell us why you think it's so great and you could be in with a chance of winning one of 10 great prizes, each with a value of at least £200.

The categories you can nominate in are:
  • Best antiques shop
  • Best antiques centre
  • Best specialist shop
  • Best mid-century/vintage shop
  • Best auction house

Prizes include:
  • Linea by Portmeiron Blue Laurel porcelain dinnerware set, worth over £200
  • Overnight stay at the Royal Crescent Hotel, Bath, worth £375
  • Overnight stay with dinner for two at The Swan, Lavenham, worth over £300
  • A stunning Interflora flower arrangement worth £250
  • LAPADA antiques vouchers worth £200

The winning shops will be announced by Kirstie Allsopp at the Bath Decorative Antiques Fair on 8th March 2012.

"Buying antiques and vintage is about getting beautiful, unique, green things for your home but also about respecting the environment and being sensible with your money. I know that if everything went belly up tomorrow I could sell the contents of my house for considerably more than I paid for it – and I couldn't say that if I'd bought new. Good quality antiques shops are really important. The dealers can find things for you, tell you their history, and give you time to make your decision. Nominate your favourite – it's a way of thanking them for being good at what they do."
Kirstie Allsopp, TV presenter

"Allow your home to speak about your life, loves and experiences, and seek out the individual and the characterful by visiting one of the thousands of antiques shops, fairs and auction houses spread across our country. It's green and wise for your wallet too."
Mark Hill, author and Antiques Roadshow expert
